13 Omens at Galaxy Con Nightmare Weekend

I didn’t post anything last week because I was at Galaxy Con Nightmare Weekend with my pals at Find the Path Ventures. The con was about all things horror and featured guests like Elvira and the Terrifier clown.

Mothman

While I’m not a horror fan, I am a horror TTRPG fan. Someone over the weekend asked how I could love games like Mothership and Call of Cthulhu if I can’t sit through The Nightmare Before Christmas or play The Last of Us. For me, it’s a matter of agency. I get to imagine how ghoulish the murder scene is. I get to devise my own solution for thwarting the eldritch abomination. I get to choose to run out of the house like a rational person rather than up the stairs.

So while I wasn’t interested in getting horror celebrity autographs, I was hyped to play 13 Omens, Jason Bulmahn’s new horror TTRPG. Rick ran The Haunting of Hollybrook for us, and I later played a 45-minute demo with Rue Dickey, Paizo’s Head of Marketing. 13 Omens is fast, light, and economical. The shared dice pool, three-act structure, and archetypal Player Characters make it ideal for pick-up-and-play. I’d recommend it as a backup game for folks who can’t get their whole group together for their regular game. I’d also recommend it for tricking non-gamer friends and family into playing a TTRPG.
